Waihi Beach

Waihi Beach is less than 15 minutes drive from the campground. As well as the attraction of a stunning 10km stretch of white-sand beach, there are great bushwalks and fishing spots. Starting at the Northern end of the beach is the coastal track to Orokawa Bay. Continue on the coastal bush track North, you will get to Homunga Bay. Both of these tracks are beautifully secluded and a great way to spend a day.

The early Maori Pa site of Anzac Bay at the Southern end of the Bowentown Headland has excellent views of the harbour, the ranges to the West and the entire length of Waihi Beach to the North. Plenty of opportunity to really enjoy the outdoors.

Waihi Walks & Rides

For a short walk and a lovely place for a picnic, Gilmour Park is a good option. There's also an enclosed playground area for the very young ones.

If you want to stretch your legs a bit more, there's a great selection of trails for both walking and biking right in Waihi. We have the Pit Rim Walkway right in the centre of town as well as the Black Hill Walkway (with a great single-track mountain bike trail that extends it).

The Hauraki Rail Trail begins in Waihi township at the Goldfields Railway Waihi station. The well-formed gravel trail winds through the spectacular Karangahake Gorge (see details on these below).

Hauraki Rail Trail

The Hauraki Rail Trail is an all-season riding experience with almost all of it wide, flat and smooth. The gradient is gentle and is suitable for most ages and fitness levels. The portion of trail between Waihi and Paeroa travels through the spectacular Karangahake Gorge. There is an option of riding through an 1100 metre old railway tunnel too.

Waihi Arts Centre & Museum

A very interesting place to visit for the whole family. The museum presents the history of the gold mining era (1880s - 1950s) in the Karangahake and Waihi area while the gallery features a regularly changing series of local and travelling art and craft exhibitions.

Goldfields Railway

Waihi has it's own heritage railway, letting your journey by train between Waihi and Waikino at the eastern end of the spectacular Karangahake Gorge. You can travel from Waihi to Waikino and take time to visit the gorge and historic sites, then return to Waihi on a later train.

Gold Discovery Centre

Gold mining started in Waihi back in 1878 and still continues today. The Gold Discovery Centre at the top end of Waihi's main street (across the road from the iconic Cornish Pumphouse) gives a ‘hands-on’ experience that guides you through Waihi’s fascinating gold story. You can also book a Mine Tour, giving you a look at the workings of a modern-day working gold mine.
